Mark Hatfield, MD, FACS

Dr. Hatfield received his M.D. from Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, WV. Ophthalmology residency was completed at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. Vitreoretinal Fellowship training under the direction of Dr. Kirk Packo and Dr. David Orth was completed at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes in Chicago.
Dr. Hatfield is a Board Certified in Ophthalmology. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since October 1995. A native of Southern, WV, he founded the practice in 1988.
During my time at the newly established Marshall University School of Medicine, I made a commitment to return to West Virginia and provide essential care to underserved communities. I was fortunate to receive advanced training at the Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary, which, in the mid-1980s, was at the forefront of vitreoretinal surgery—a field then in its early stages. Under the leadership of Dr. Morton Goldberg as Chair and Dr. Peyman as Head of Vitreoretinal Surgery, and with guidance from distinguished chief residents such as Drs. Kirk Packo and Jose Pulido, it became clear that this subspecialty would define my professional path.
After completing fellowship training under Drs. Packo and Orth, I returned to West Virginia to honor that commitment. At the time, subspecialty retinal care was unavailable in southern West Virginia. Over the past 35 years, our group has grown significantly, expanding access to advanced care throughout the region. Ensuring access to high-quality care remains our highest priority, as it is critical for addressing healthcare disparities in rural populations across our state and nation.
Our affiliation with Retina Consultants of America has strengthened this mission by connecting us with leading providers nationwide and introducing cutting-edge research opportunities previously unavailable in our region. Delivering exceptional retinal care will continue to be our foremost objective. Contributing to the development of this practice and collaborating with dedicated physicians and staff over the years has been a privilege.
Our mission has always been to bring the highest quality of retinal care to the underserved rural population throughout our region.— Dr. Hatfield
