Diagnostics and Testing
Accurate diagnosis of retinal conditions is essential for streamlining treatment, which can help protect vision and prevent permanent vision loss. At Retina Consultants, PLLC, our expert physicians perform comprehensive testing to quickly identify issues and develop customized treatment plans, enabling patients to maintain optimal retinal health.
Dilated Eye Exam
During a dilated eye exam, your retina specialist will apply special eye drops to widen your pupils. This dilation allows for a better examination of the retina, macula, and optic nerve. After the eye drops are administered, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes for your eyes to become fully dilated. You may experience blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light for 4 to 6 hours following the exam. Therefore, it's important to arrange for someone to drive you home after your appointment.
Retinal Imaging Tests
Advanced imaging techniques are crucial for diagnosing retinal conditions, enabling retina specialists to detect problems in the retina, macula, and vitreous.
- Fluorescein angiography: In this test, a retina specialist injects colored dye into the bloodstream. This dye travels to the blood vessels in the eye, and a special camera captures images to identify any abnormalities in the retina.
- Indocyanine green angiography: Like fluorescein angiography, this test also involves an intravenous injection of dye. However, the type of dye used in this test absorbs infrared light, making it easier to visualize deeper blood vessels in the retina.
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT): This non-invasive technique uses infrared light waves to capture detailed images of the retina.
- Fundus photography: This diagnostic and monitoring tool utilizes a specialized camera to capture detailed images of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of the eye.
- Ultrasound: Retinal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the retina and other internal eye structures.
Amsler Grid Test
The Amsler grid is a simple square containing a grid pattern and a dot in the middle that can help show problem spots in the field of vision. If the macula is damaged, patients may notice that the lines in a grid appear wavy, broken, or distorted. You can perform this test at home to self-monitor your vision and should report any changes to your doctor as soon as possible.
